This is one of the first books I bought for my Kindle. I enjoyed it completely. Next time I read it I plan to have a map of South and Central America so I can follow the man's trek. He was certainly made of strong stuff to endure this trip. This is someone I would have been proud to have known. I came across this book through reading "Man & Horse: The Long Ride Across America by John Egenes, another very good read. Wish I could have known both of these authors. The writing style is totally different in each book but the 'Ride' is the focus. After reading Tschiffely's book I feel I learned more about South America than I did in all my school days and I want to learn more. That's is what a good book can do, open your horizons. Highly recommend.
Absolutely awesome reading this adventure of three incredible personalities - a very clever man and his two very capable and insightful companions. This is the most incredible book and I enjoyed feeling a part of their adventure - traveling through places and times which have completely changed. Reading is an adventure which allows us to travel and experience things, a gift from writers from other times and cultures. This book is a treasure and I am certain that I will journey here again. Worth reading more than one time, for sure.
Aime Tschiffely gives such a vivid description of the countries, surroundings, trials, tribulations and victories that the reader feels as if he/she is with Tschiffely and his brave and loyal companions Mancha and Gato, through every hard earned step of this very arduous but rewarding journey. Aime gives detailed and sympathetic descriptions of the people he encounters along the way and it is heart warming to read how often he and his horses were on the receiving end of human kindness and generosity, often from people who had very little themselves. It must be remembered that this book was written in the 1920s, so is a reflection of the prevailing attitudes and beliefs of the times so is not politically correct so the reader should not take offense at some observations. Tschiffely and his horses were admirable and inspiring beings who persevered and succeeded in very tough and sometimes dangerous conditions. Tshiffely never felt sorry for himself, and I laughed out loud at certain points in the book when he described certain events with a dry sense of humor. This is a book very well worth taking the time to read.
Absolutely one of the best book s to read. The author s details and descriptions are very informative. Everyone has a strong desire to travel and reading this book allows those that cannot actually accomplish the travel, a vivid account of the good and the bad of traveling. This is the type of book that can be read and re-read many times and still the reader will never tire of the writing.
Clearly, one of the best "travel" stories ever written. I read this book for the first time in 1957 as a young boy and it left a lasting impression on me as a beacon for exploration. The world was quite a bit different in those days, but it was nice to see complete strangers lend a helping hand as Tschiffely journeyed north on his two horses.I had been looking for this book for some time and thrilled that it was re-printed.
A friend of mine from Paraguay recommended this book to me, and I have thanked him profusely since having completed it. Tschiffely achieves two things in writing this diary. First, he gives a fascinating account of what life was like on the trail through the Americas in the 1920's, an era of transition from the horse to the automobile, from undiscovered lands to thoroughly mapped and surveyed developments, from untouched communities to homogenized modernity. Second, he writes before the age of political correctness and his observations, though not mean-spirited, are totally honest and telling. This is no dreamy-eyed travelogue. The book is not about horses per se, but if you have any affinity for equestrianism you will not be disappointed. The quiet bond that forms between Tschiffely and his two horses is touching, and his love of animals in general is not rooted in slobbering sentimentalism, but in respect and understanding of the magnificent creatures which contribute so much to our lives. This book is for those who want to be transported to another world and gain insight into what we have lost as a culture, both good and bad. Truly this story needs to be rediscovered!
Hard to believe that this was possible and that he and both horses survived. A great way to learn about South and Central America and their peoples. This journey not only took guts but an unbelievable amount of planning. The fortitude of the horses was amazing to read about, especially when you see how horses are bred today. This is an epic tale.
I keep seeing comments about writing styles and out dated. This was a grand adventure that should be seen through the eyes and attitudes of a man in the 1920's.Leave your 21st century sensibilities at the door and enter into the world of the 1920s and a man who done the impossible that will never be done in the same way again! You can copy the ride but you could never copy the conditions, political climate, or see them from the eyes of an educated man of the age.Buy this book... Live a real adventure... Leave your politically correct , small world view at the door. Visit a different time and see history...
