I bought this book because Rhyolite has been one of my favorite places since I was a teenager. I loved the old train depot and the Cook Bank. The bank only had what was left of a couple of walls, but the depot was open to tourists. When I had children, they enjoyed trips to the ghost town and I have a picture of us standing in the doorway of the Cook Bank. I loved reading about the men and women that settled there and the next time I go back I will know more about what it was like when it was "booming" . My husband and I went out to Rhyolite a couple of years ago and were saddened to see everything behind chain link fencing. Supposedly toxic danger. The fencing will at least protect what is left from the vandalism we have been seeing done to our petroglyphs near Las Vegas. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves history. The book is well written and researched.
I confess I have read only one chapter -- the one that deals primarily with the town of Rhyolite. It is now a ghost town -- one of the better ones in the American West because it is a TRUE ghost town. It has not been commercialized; yet, there is more there than a few old boards, so you know immediately that a town was, at one time, there. The chapter on the red light ladies of Rhyolite did not disappoint. In addition to old ghost towns, I also love "those magnificent madams" and the ladies who were in their employ. These ladies were such a vital part of the Old West! Although she may not be truly representative of these ladies, I always think of Miss Kitty on "Gunsmoke" when thinking about these women -- beautiful, strong, yet warm and vulnerable. And yes, Miss Kitty WAS a madam. Sorry I've read only one chapter, but I can say without reservation that I absolutely loved it. I would venture to guess that the other chapters will be as enthralling as the one on Rhyolite.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is well researched and the author has written it in a way that brings the past alive. I was particularly taken by the chapter on the Chinese women and their enslavement. If you have any interest in the history of prostitution in the US, this book is a "must read." Kudos to the author for an unforgettable account of the struggles and triumphs of the women who were gutsy enough to pack up and head West to the rough and tough world of the mining days in Death Valley.
I like history and mining history this book is packed with both. Even though it concentrate mostly on death valley and Nevada area.
Very readable and seemingly well researched. Plus, Flinchum sheds light on truths overshadowed by legends.
It is clear as soon as you begin to read this book that the author did a tremendous amount of research and as a result she is able to bring all these fascinating women to life. You get to know them and a look into what life was like then. This is a must read for anyone interested in getting a greater understanding of women of the wild west or just wanting a good read!
very interesting history of some of those that are often not considered in the history of the West's mining towns.
A well researched and well written book, anyone interested in history of Death Valley and the surrounding areas should have this book in their library. Robin offers insights into the reality of working women in mining camps of the region.
