I ordered this book for my class because it is required.When I received I was stunned by how small it is.It's only 205 pages including index, but it retails for more than $205, which means that it costs more than $1 PER PAGE!!!But it's required for my class and my class is very information intensive, so as I'm really getting into the statistics of the book I start to notice little things, like for example, as many as ten times I the author has provided world-wide 'estimates' using as little as 10 Ports! How can you provide a WORLD WIDE estimate with only 10 Ports?Over and over I notice that the statistics the author uses have little stars and the supplemental says, "based on 6 responses" or some other nonsense. 6 Responses???Oh and the outside cover says the book is 'Jargon Free', yeah instead of using Jargon, the author constantly uses acronyms like TEU, THC, FEU, and there is no glossary.This book is VERY expensive but deceptive. For the ridiculous price, the book is comparatively tiny, black and white, has an index smaller than a high school text book, no glossary, and even the "List of Figures" is incompletely and the figures that are listed are often listed incorrectly.The back cover of the book purports the book to be 'Jargon Free' but it is anything but. There is a massive amount of Jargon contained within the book and because of the lack of glossary, you are often left struggling to figure out what the words mean in the context of Maritime shipping.Finally, the figures the book includes are 'estimates' because when you read the fine print often the figures include responses from less than 10% of port operators and ships.Lastly, the book is not on Googlebooks or anywhere else referenced on the internet which would more than make up for the elementary school search-ability of the book when it comes time to study. The two stars I included were for the attempt to create a coherent book, but while the book purports to be a 'guide' it is so lightly topical that it should be entitled "INTRO to Port Management and Operations," and the second book Port Management and Operations should be WELL indexed, with a large glossary, online accessibility and search-ability.For as much as I paid for this book, I have seen better books written and designed by graduated students.
Now it is a good book for what its worth but focuses a lot on London which is a bit of an out dated port, doesn't even crack the top ten on most list of top ports, but the author uses it to describe how ports got their start with the any port model and uses London as his example. Has some useful tables and graphs but again the book overall seems a bit out dated.
I was probably just as shocked as many students who received their little package at the door. In fact I was so upset that I immediately emailed my professor with complaints. But...... I've changed my opinion. Although small, this book is packed full of information, history, data and the author gives it to us in concise, clear language. Most textbooks go overboard on "fluff" and flowery language rather than sticking to the points and remaining clear and concise. This book does just that and I'm very pleased with it.

Highly recommended for professionals in ports and marine industry. It covers the most discussed subjects of the marine industry. I was expecting to have it on my kindle, now I can take it easily wherever I go!
