I must first start off by saying that I love Sara Shepard. When things are tough and I just want to read a book that flows and is an easy read, Shepard is my go-to. Her writing style is fun and creative and will leave you on the edge of your seat. I read all of her Pretty Little Liars novels. Once I saw that there was a new TV show in the making of this series, I HAD to read it. This story follows Ava, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Julie, and Parker. All students who go above and beyond to achieve greatness with their education and everything else in their lives. Most of these girls are not too close, but they have one thing in common for sure: Nolan. A ruthless bully who has left an impact on all of their lives for different reasons. But when the girls plan a prank to get back at a Nolan, something goes wrong. In the same night as the prank, at a high school party, Nolan ends up dead and these girls are at the top of the suspect list! This is for sure a page turner! I am SO GLAD that I bought the second book the same time I bought this one because I have to see what happens next in this cliff hanger!! Happy reading!!! This one should be on your list!
Here are a few things that you need to know before reading a Sara Shepard book:1. The guilty party will never be the first person the girls (because the main characters are always teenage girls) suspect. The girls will suspect someone obvious (or obviously set up) and then be too blindsighted to consider the possibility that they could be mistaken or that the killer is smart enough to fake them out.2. You'll be left hanging until the last possible moment of the last book in the series, so unless the book is a one-off like a The Heiresses (and even then..), better prepare yourself by gathering up the other books in the series before starting the first one, because once you start, you'll want to binge-read until you finally get some answers.3. The cops/detectives working the case are the most inept bunch around. And they all seem to think that teenage girls are criminal masterminds.I've read plenty of Sara Shepard books, and I've come to enjoy these 3 givens. As with the other books I've read by her, this book has its share of red herrings, and plenty of good suspects to keep me flying through the pages. Because this is a two-parter, it ends on a cliffhanger. Sara Shepard books are my guilty pleasure, and this one was just as fun as they usually are. I'm moving onto the second book in the 2-book "series" immediately so I can get some closure, but I definitely enjoyed the ride.
Unoriginal idea with lazy writing. I figured the whole thing out 1/3 of the way through the first book. I kept reading hoping there would be some original twist but alas, there was not. It's been done before, better , might I add by others. If you're going to do something that's been done before then it needs to be better or really you shouldn't bother. I really wanted to like this book because I have liked a lot of her other books but this one was sloppy, overdone, contradictory, and so obvious it couldn't begin to pass as a mystery.
The Perfectionists contains an amazing plot with diverse characters. Shepard's writing style is done so that bits and pieces of the overall story are exposed intermittently throughout the book. At almost no time, does the reader understand every detail. . .because some details are left unclear or unrevealed. She trusts the reader to put together the pieces which makes it a great reading experience. Please know that the book is the first in a series (which I did not know at first), so the ending will leave you less than satisfied even though you do receive a glimpse into the sequel. From the last page of the prologue, the reader is continuously compelled to read further. . .and just when you expect you have figured out what happened, you'll be surprised once a gain. Excellent book!
When I was done with PLL there was the lying games, when the lying games ended I wondered what I was going to do with myself. Sara Shepards books have been the guilty pleasure to my adult reading. This book is an amazing follow up to those incredible books. She seriously has got me hooked on her books - especially because they're such easy reads I can typically get through them in a day. The perfectionists, while not PLL, def. has a very similar writing style - I guess Shepard knows when she hit a home run, not to differ too much. Though, a little difference could be nice - and a little difference is what you get with this book, which is why it's so great. Love the characters too, they were easy to like, hate, etc. Love this book
DNFCouldnt take it I had to jump to the end to see who-dun-it ( didnt realise was a 2 book series here) All I could picture was all the PLL girls from the TV show and even though I still watch it Reading it is different especially when you have the feeling of Been there done that already.I knew I was taking a chance when I got the book to start with but Blah just couldnt do it. Only reason I gave 2 stars was because the story was good,well as much of it as I read anyways.
I was actually left a little shell shocked at the ending, it had a twist, but nothing to surprising. The problem I had with the book were the characters personalities, they seemed a bit too clueless, but I guess that's the appeal? Anyways, the suspension was pretty on point, Parker and Julie's relationship was as adorable as puppies, and there was a lot of screaming at the book moments. Like in all Sara Shepard books, this one was full of betrayal, I mean, who in this book didn't get betrayed!? Some things I could see a mile away, or in this case, pages away... And the girls totally set themselves up multiple times.Overall, it was a decent read. I hope she doesn't drag the series out, and I'm finding myself wanting to know "who dunit?"
Anyone who enjoys Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars books will enjoy this. I’m off to read the next one! Mysterious ending...
