I have been told that schools don't teach handwriting anymore. WHAT?! Perhaps people don't ever plan on having to write a letter, note, or card... or to fill out an application for something?! I personally think that is CRAZY!! I have talked to people who are responsible for hiring employees at their companies & they say job applications are atrocious now... they say that people actually fill out job applications like they would write a text message... full of acronyms and w/incorrect spelling & improper grammar to top it off. The other huge issue I have been made aware of is that people have TERRIBLE, illegible handwriting as well. I mean why would it be neat when they don't even have to learn it these days.. sigh...Call me mean but I am going to make sure my children are able to write... neatly, correctly, & w/out using acronyms. Enter Horizons Penmanship. The beginning of the book focuses on printing manuscript. It may seem repetitive to some people, but I don't make my kids write until they hate writing. I have them trace the words & then write the words in their own very best handwriting 2-3 times as well. If they show me they can do that, then they are done. If they do a poor job, well, THEN they will have to write the words more times. It is entirely up to them. I do not believe in allowing poor workmanship & slacking off. I also will not just teach to a test to pass someone along. I expect an assignment to be completed to the student's best ability... again, not perfect, but as long as I know the student is really trying, that is my goal. Each lesson takes approx 5-10 minutes. There is one lesson every so many days where they have to write an entire paragraph but it is really only maybe 25-30 words, so even that should only take maybe 15 minutes tops & that's only if you have a child who likes to take their time. I just let mine go at their own pace, knowing full well that if they do a nice job (it doesn't have to be perfect, just nice) they can be done w/out having to write everything over & over & over again. After the full manuscript section is tackled, then they start cursive. Even though this book says it is for 2nd grade, I start the 2nd grade handwriting with cursive in 3rd grade. I use this book because of the fact that it starts out w/manuscript & goes at a nice, steady, yet not overwhelming pace. I also like that there are Bible verses in it. My students have all enjoyed this curriculum so far, so I plan on using it for any future students as well.If you want to teach your student how to write neatly & do it w/out overwhelming them, this is a great curriculum. They do have a teacher's guide, but I haven't even opened it so you could probably just as easily just buy the student workbook and not the teacher's guide. I am not so much concentrating on the HOW-TO of handwriting at this point since I start it w/my 2nd graders, as I am the result of how it looks. I want my students to find a comfortable how-to for them so that they don't mind actually writing things out in the future AND have what they write be legible to not only themselves, but to others as well. I am not setting out to have students who use cookie cutter handwriting, but to find what style works best for them that allows them to reach their full potential in mastering a crucial, disappearing skill. While tablets, computers, smart phones, etc. may be the present & the future, we really do need to learn basic life skills, which include the soon to be forgotten art of handwriting; this is a great curriculum to use to do so!
