Review
Maritime Security is a textbook that should be required reading for those homeland security officials, the U.S. Coast Guard, policy makers, goverment and private sector professionals, those who sail or take cruise ships to Western Europe, students involved in maritime security, down to hands-on level seaport security professionals nad commercial maritime transport workers...Even if you are not a national security practitioner, Maritime Security is a useful reference to qualify and validate what the popular media are saying and writing about piracy.--Gene Poteat, The Intelligencer: Journal of U.S. Intelligence Studies, 16.2, 2008.

Firstly, let me inform that I just read nearly 75% of the book as I skipped sections that do not have anything to do with my professional interests, but I took a look on those sections. The ISPS Code issued after September 11 highlighted the importance of the maritime security area and the above book covers a wide range of subject concerning such area. Reference, however, is also made to SOLAS and MARPOL rules. The initial chapters give readers a general notion about commercial and port operation topics that affect every entity involved in maritime business. Those chapters help readers to having a broader view of the above business. The book is full of photos that provide visual support for every reader to figure out what it is exposed in writing along the book. Nevertheless, I just regret the bad quality of many photos. Very practical and helpful hints are supplied all along the book that surprised me.It is important to draw attention that port terminals exporting to the USA must comply with all requirements of the ISPS Code, so that port security is a key subject nowadays. As the book is a up-to-date publication, readers will enjoy getting to know modern equipment and devices that might be used in security prevention tasks, many being totally new to me.Finally, the final chapter provides an interesting examination of information security.
This books is a well done introduction to Maritime Security. It is informative, easy to read, and thorough as an introdution can be.He hits on all the major topics, and also touches upon several key security concerns, not just the amorphous "terrorism".I immediately put the information learned from this text into use in my PhD coursework, and I have used bits of it in the undergraduate courses I currently teach. (EDIT: I will use it to teach a Maritime Security course in Fall 2015. It's probably THE best book out there on this topic.) It has definitely given me a broader context and better background with which to discuss issues that come up.I rented the Kindle Edition. This is brilliant. By allowing me to rent for a month, Amazon has secured a sale of the physical book.Let me mention something about the Kindle edition. It is just OK. I thought that the publisher could have made better use of the ability to hyperlink inside the e-text. Many of the pictures were on pages well apart from the text that referred to the picture. There is no sense of pagination in the e-text either, making it impossible to cite. (This is the negative side of why I will buy the print version.)All in all, it was worth the money. (EDIT: The lack of a fifth star is due to the Kindle Edition formatting, not due to the content, which is top-notch.)
bought this book and studied on my own. got an A. the book is good very informative. worh the money
This is such an interresting and eye-opening book I've read,( that was non-fictional in years ) since my time in the army !! Should be taught in High Schools to teach awareness of danger in our surroundings! Also the aurthor is smart and hot !!
Complete and concise. Love it.
Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive and informative guide on this subject ever published. A must read for all management and security staff involved with the transportation business.Clearly the author has been there "and got the t-shirt". And yet the material is not anecdotal. It is well-organized with very specific descriptions and instructions.
